Safety Instructions and Advice for Choosing Toys from the General Secretariat for Consumer Affairs

a) Labeling and CE mark

• Check that the toy carries the CE mark, which confirms that the manufacturer declares the product complies with European safety standards.
• The toy should also display the name, company name, trademark and address of the manufacturer or importer, as well as instructions for use in Greek. These details help ensure that the product has been checked and is safe for sale.

b) Age restriction labels and instructions for use

• Check the suitable age for each toy, especially if it carries a 0-3 warning. This symbol means that the toy is not suitable for children under 36 months, as it may contain small parts that could be swallowed.

c) Supervision during use

• Some toys should be used only under adult supervision or assembled according to specific rules. Follow the instructions for correct use and supervise the child during play.

Additional Tips for Safe Toys:

1. Choose age-appropriate toys

• Choose toys that encourage initiative, creativity and the child's skills. The most expensive toy is not always the best one; choose the toy that matches the child's age, needs and interests.

2. Be careful with violent content

• Avoid toys that promote violence, aggressive behavior, discrimination or racist attitudes. Prefer toys that support mental wellbeing and positive social skills.

3. Use safety equipment

• For toys with wheels, such as bicycles and skates, make sure the child also uses the correct safety equipment, such as a helmet and knee pads in the right size.

4. Ask specialists

• If you have doubts about assembly or suitability, ask trained store staff for help.

5. Store toys safely

• Teach children to store their toys safely to avoid accidents, and keep toys with small or sharp parts away when younger siblings are present.

6. Supervise play

• Children should be supervised while playing to ensure safe and proper use of toys. Supervision is even more important during holidays, when children of different ages play together.

7. Check packaging and quality

• Check the packaging for damage before purchase and, when you get home, make sure all instructions and accessories are included. Good-quality toys last longer and offer greater safety.

8. Read the instructions before use

• If the toy requires assembly, make sure you follow the instructions carefully and explain to the child how to use it safely.

9. Remove dangerous packaging

• Remove all plastic packaging and ties before giving the toy to the child. Keep instructions and warranty information in case they are needed later.

10. Inspect toys regularly

• Check toys often for broken parts or missing pieces. The holiday period is a good time to tidy the toy box and remove worn items.

11. Use batteries correctly

• Toys with batteries should be checked regularly for leakage or poor battery condition, especially when handled by young children.

Following these guidelines helps create a safe and enjoyable play environment for children, while protecting their health and development.
